The Pines Express

Originally introduced in 1928, the inter-regional service was re-introduced after the War in May 1949, the Pines is probably one of the most well known titled trains. The express had portions for Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield and these are reflected on the carriage destination boards. The headboards were generally only used when on the Somerset and Dorset section of its journey before reaching its Bournemouth destination. The express last run in March 1967

Re-introduced in 1948, this luxury Pullman Car express operated between Kings Cross and Glasgow via Leeds and Edinburgh. The service was finally suspended in 1976. This pack is suitable for detailing trains running from 1948 until the late 1960s. The Pullman Car Company provided special tailboards featuring the company’s crest.

The Red Dragon

This express running between London Paddington and South Wales was introduced by British Railways in 1950. The first headboards were introduced in 1951 and were either black or red; as an experiment in 1956 the cream headboard with dark lettering was used. For a few weeks during 1953, the train carried an additional crown and cipher headboard on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. The curved plate surmounted by a red dragon was introduced later in 1956 and it is believed that this was not used after 1962.The Red Dragon as a titled train last ran in June 1965.

Introduced by British Railways in 1951 for the Festival of Britain, this express ran between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street. The train had quite distinctive tailboards which were frequently used. The title last ran in 1966.

The Royal Scot

The Royal Scot was first introduced by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1927. This prestigious express ran between London (Euston) and Glasgow. It ceased running for the duration of the Second World War with re-introduction in 1948. This pack allows you to model the train as it would have run from the early 1950s through to the steam/diesel transition period into the late 1960s. The Royal Scot had very distinctive headboards. The plain red headboard was superseded by those with tartan backgrounds. The train was also provided with matching tartan carriage name and destination boards together with tailboards for the rear of the train. Cast locomotive headboards that were placed on the upper central smoke box lamp bracket were also introduced between 1951 and 1953. All the different variants are produced in the pack.

The Royal Wessex

Running from Waterloo, the train title was introduced for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The train had three sections and these are represented on the carriage boards for the modeller to select. The rectangular headboard introduced in 1953 was fixed to the lower half of the smoke box door whereas the earlier versions had been placed centrally on the front buffer beam. The service was withdrawn in 1967.

The Royal Duchy

This express running between London Paddington and Penzance was introduced by British Railways in January 1957. The train only ever carried the one cast headboard with brown lettering on a cream background. In the centre of this was the coat of arms for the Duchy of Cornwall. The Royal Duchy as a titled train last ran in June 1965. Two sets of carriage boards are provided, Western Region started to use the traditional Great Western colour scheme on its stock in the latter years of the 1950s.

 

The South Yorkshireman

TT2-SOUTHYK

The service began in May 1948 and ran between London Marylebone and Bradford via Huddersfield and Halifax. This set comprises of two sizes of carriage boards. The shorter ones were used with LNER Gresley designed stock and the later eleven feet ones are for use with British Railway’s Mark 1 coaching stock. The service ceased to run in January 1960.

The Talisman

The title was introduced as a new service in 1956 running between Kings Cross (London) and Edinburgh (Waverley). Upon dieselisation of the service in 1962, new headboards (white background) were introduced. The Talisman ceased running as a titled train in May 1968.

Thames-Clyde Express

Originally run by the LMSR from 1927 until the outbreak of war, the title was re-introduced by British Railways in 1949. Running between St Pancras (London) and Glasgow (St Enoch), this was transferred to Glasgow Central after St Enoch’s closure. This titled express was one of the four London Midland Region expresses to carry a Coronation crown and cipher headboard during 1953.

The service was re-introduced in 1946 by the London North Eastern Railway and ran from Kings Cross to Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate and Hull. With the introduction of diesel haulage the white headboard was introduced.

This express introduced by British Railways in 1957 ran between St Pancras (London) and Edinburgh (Waverley). From 1965 until the title last ran in 1968, the service was only available on the summer timetable.

The train’s title was given to commemorate the patron saint of Glasgow and was originally introduced by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1937, this titled service ceased at the start of the Second World War. Running between Glasgow and Aberdeen the service was re-introduced by British Railways in 1949 leaving Aberdeen at 9.35 a.m. and Glasgow at 5.00 p.m. From June 1962, the title was used on the 5.30 p.m. Glasgow to Aberdeen service and departed Aberdeen at 9.30 a.m. The title was finally dropped in May 1968.

The beginning of the 1960s saw a huge rise in motor traffic in the West Country. Many of the roads were simply not adequate to cope with summertime holiday traffic and therefore British Railways determined to try and grow business. The answer came in the Saturday car carrier service operation from Surbiton to Okehampton that was inaugurated in June 1960. It is believed that the coaches and GUVs carried destination boards covered in paper labels and we have replicated the two colour schemes that we know were used during its short life.
